Lent is a season of preparation for experiencing Easter, and it is characterized by a spirit of self-examination and repentance.

It isn’t uncommon for a Christian to give up something for the season of Lent as a natural aid and reminder to spiritual growth. Some Christians pick a day on which to fast from food. The time that normally would have been spent in preparing and eating meals, is spent instead in prayer and Bible study, and over the course of the day the feeling of hunger is a natural reminder to pray.

These “Lenten Disciplines” are best done voluntarily and with a heart that desires to grow closer to God, rather than out of a sense of legalism.

‘…early in the fifth century, Saint Augustine noted that perceptive non-Christians really did know a great deal about ‘the earth, the heavens, and the other elements of the world, about the motion and orbit of the stars and even their size and relative positions, about the predictable eclipses of the sun and moon, the cycles of the years and the seasons, about the kinds of animals, shrubs, stones, and so forth’. Given such able observers, he held that it was ‘a disgraceful and dangerous thing for an infidel to hear a Christian, presumably giving the meaning of Holy Scripture, talking nonsense on these topics”. - Noll, Jesus Christ and the Life of the Mind, p. 100.

Various churches have provided a refuge for fugitives from God—His voice drowned in the chanting, His smell lost in the incense, His purpose obscured and confused in creeds, dogmas, dissertations…in vast cathedrals, as in little conventicles…one could get away from God.” ~ Malcolm Muggeridge
