Lenten Prayers for our Community

April 16: Easter Sunday!

O God, who made this most holy day to shine with the glory of the Lord’s resurrection: Stir up in your Church that Spirit of adoption which is given to us in Baptism, that we, being renewed both in body and mind, may worship you in sincerity and truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

April 15: Prayer for Holy Saturday

O God, Creator of heaven and earth: Grant that, as the
crucified body of your dear Son was laid in the tomb and rested on this holy Sabbath, so we may await with him the coming of the third day, and rise with him to newness of life; who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

April 13: Prayer for Good Friday

Almighty God, we pray you graciously to behold this your family, for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed, and given into the hands of sinners, and to suffer death upon the cross; who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

April 13: Prayer for Maundy Thursday

Almighty Father, whose dear Son, on the night before he suffered, instituted the Sacrament of his Body and Blood: Mercifully grant that we may receive it thankfully in remembrance of Jesus Christ our Lord, who in these holy mysteries gives us a pledge of eternal life; and who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

April 12: Prayer for Single Parents

Dear Father God, Jesus the Christ, and Holy Spirit,
Please be near those who are single parents in the South Haven area. May they put their hope in you and continue night and day in prayer. Help others in the body of Christ respond to their needs. Help parents to train their children in the way they should live and give children hearts to honor and obey their parents. May fathers not exasperate their children. Turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the hearts of the children to their parents, for a house divided against itself cannot stand. Amen.

We sing to you, Lord, a new song; we sing to you, Lord, with all the earth. We sing to you, Lord, and praise your name; we proclaim your salvation day after day. We declare your glory among the nations, your marvelous deeds among all peoples. For great are you, Lord, and most worthy of praise; you are to be feared above all gods. (Psalm 96:1-6)

April 8: Prayer for the Emergency Services Personnel of South Haven

Dear Father God, Jesus the Christ, and Holy Spirit,
Your word says that unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain, so we lay the city of South Haven before you, Lord, and ask for your protection. We thank you that our brave police, firefighters, and emergency medical technicians are never alone in their work, but always under your watchful eye. Watch over their coming and going both now and forevermore and grant them your peace. Amen.

April 7: Prayer for the Emergency Services Personnel of South Haven

Dear Father God, Jesus the Christ, and Holy Spirit,
Help our emergency services personnel be strong and courageous because you, yourself go before them into all they face, and you will be their rear guard. We pray they will make you their dwelling place that you will command your angels to guard them in all their ways. May no weapon forged against them prosper. When they pass through the waters, be with them and when they walk through fire, may they not be burned. With the help of Christ, may they will be able to do what is asked of them. Amen.

April 4: Prayer for the Media and Entertainment Industries

Dear Father God, Jesus the Christ, and Holy Spirit,
For the media and entertainment industry we pray that you will guard their words and images and instruct those involved in the ways of wisdom. Raise up people of righteousness in the industry, for good people bring good things out of the good stored up in their hearts. Help them to be honest and speak the truth, giving truthful and impartial reports. Help no unwholesome talk to come out of their mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up, so that those who listen will benefit. The media and entertainment industry is given great freedom, help them not use that freedom to indulge the flesh but rather to serve our world humbly in love. Amen.

May you guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus and help us to focus on things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. You give wisdom and from your mouth come knowledge and understanding. Discretion will protect us, understanding will guard us, and your wisdom will save us from allowing the evil one influence over us. March 23: Prayer for South Haven Area Churches

Dear Father God, Jesus the Christ, and Holy Spirit,
Give your church shepherds who deny themselves and live lives worthy of the calling they have received. Fill them with your Holy Spirit, so as they preach your word, it is confirmed by the signs that accompany it. Thank you that the same power that raised Christ from the dead is within all who believe, so the gospel does not go out as simple words, but with the Holy Spirit’s power and deep conviction. We pray that as our shepherds preach, words may be given to them so they will fearlessly make known the gospel message of Jesus Christ so none will be able to resist or contradict it. Amen.

There is one body and one Spirit, just as we were called to one hope when we were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. May everyone know we are your followers because of the love we have for one another and by our good deeds that glorify you. Amen.

As we devote ourselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer, may we become rooted and built up in Christ and strengthened in the faith. Keep us from hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of the world rather than on Christ. Thank you, God, that when we received your word, we accepted it not as human word, but as it actually is, the word of God. May we never neglect your word, that you will sanctify us by it. Amen.
